Fighting The Good Fight

Sitting around the table, we were all discussing how focusing on choosing Christ in our decision making process can lead to getting to know Him better.  We were talking about how Paul prayed for the church at Ephesus, linking wisdom to our relationship with Christ: "... {the Father] may give you wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better."

I could tell the question asked had came from a genuine battle ground.  "Why is it that when it seems I am getting closer to God in relationship, all this stuff starts coming up to get in the way?  It seems that as I am growing closer to Him, something else starts to go wrong."

Because the enemy's number one goal is to separate us from God.

Who is the enemy?

"For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies,
but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world,
against mighty powers in this dark world,
against evil spirits in the heavenly places."

Ephesians 6:12
Identifying our true enemy enables us prepare and equip ourselves for the battle.

Satan has a huge army and vast arsenal of resources and weapons, but a favorite tactic envolves lies and deception.  He creates circumstances and situations which cause us to redirect our attention away from God and onto distractions where he disguises himself so that we do not recognize his role as the initiator.
"No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds."

2 Corinthians 11:14-15

What are the enemy's tactics?

"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:"
John 10:10
Battles with the enemy has been all to real for me lately, and by lately I really mean for several years now.

I felt God placing the desire on my heart to minister to women, to engage them in ways to build community with each other and grow in their personal relationship with Christ about six years ago.  As I look back now, I can see the strategic timing and skillful execution of the enemy in his quest to derail each attempt I made to advance along God's path for my life.
  • Clearing obstacles so I could follow my own desires instead of God's
  • Bringing the wrong people into my life to feed my insecurities
  • Filling my thoughts with a quick list of excuses for not following God's path
  • Causing me to focus on my inabilities instead of God's ability
  • Taking advantage of my personal weaknesses
  • Fueling strife in relationships to redirect my focus and energy
On discussing Satan's schemes, Pastor Warren E. Berkley says:
It has to do with cunning or skill applied to no good purpose.  He lies to us, wants to trap us, discourage us and snare us. He will do anything he can do with cunning satanic variety to weaken us and destroy us. He goes to work daily to produce discouragement, confusion, indifference and imbalance. He is our chief enemy, but deals in wiles and stratagems.

How do I fight the enemy?

"Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand
against the devil’s schemes."
Ephesians 6:11
God not only arms us with mighty weapons to use in our battles against the enemy but He also fights the battles for and with us.

In truth, without God, we are in no position to even engage in battle with Satan or his minions. It is only when we focus on God, call out to Him and return to Him, are we equiped through Him to fight and win the battle.
  • David didn't slay Goliath on his own, it was God fighting with and through him.
  • Gideon and his small army did not defeat the Midianites on their own, it was God fighting with and through them.
Likewise, we will not be able to defeat the enemy on our own, but as His children, the Lord will go with us to fight for us
"for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you,
to fight for you against your enemies, to save you."

Deuteronomy 20:4
Oh Father, I do not like to engage in warfare, but I will fight for the Kingdom. I pray for endurance and strength as I continue the fight. Help me stay focused on you, help me to have clarity to see the enemy's tactics for what they truly are, lies and deception. Thank you for going into this battle with me and thank you for the victory that lies ahead. May all that is said and done bring glory to your Holy Name.  Amen

Great post, Jana! Satan's #1 goal is to separate us from God! Amen! We must arm ourselves, so that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ.

This is such a great post, Jana! Oftentimes, I think we tend to forget who we are actually against!
Jana - February 20th, 2015 at 9:23 AM
Oh I do Crystal! Especially when it gets personal. I tend to focus on the person I'm fighting with instead of the instigator behind the scenes.

Thank you for stopping by today. Blessings, Jana

"Because the enemy's number one goal is to separate us from God"
All that we need to know so that we know we need to Stand firm and let nothing move us...giving ourselves FULLY to the work of the Lord! We do not labor in vain! (1 Cor 15:58)
Stand back Satan, we are not fighting alone, we fight with the ONE who wins!
