What to Wear
by Jana Kennedy-Spicer on July 14th, 2016

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."
Colossians 3:12-14

When things around us seem to spin out of control and all the world around us is full of chaos and hurt, we can find hope in knowing that God is faithful. And has already spoken to us as to what we should do.

[as God's chosen people, holy & dearly loved]
  • Be compassionate - understand other's feelings
  • Extend kindness - be friendly
  • Remain humble - put other's needs first
  • Show gentleness - soothe with calm
  • Be patient - peacefully endure
  • Bear with each other - show tolerance
  • Forgive one another - cancel the debt
  • Put on love - affectionate concern for the well-being of others

Our assignment is clear. God has spoken directly how we are to respond to others. Not because of their earned merit, not because of their behavior - sometimes, in spite of their behavior. No, God does not instruct our behavior based on others behavior, but based on HIS.
"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God."
Colossians 3:1
We may be physically on this world, but we are not of this world. We have been raised with Christ, therefore, as God's chosen people, we are to behave as God's chosen people. We are different from those of the world. We are to look different. We are to behave different. We are to love different.

Let us put on all the markers of our Lord and Father.

8 Scriptures to Clothe Ourselves

"So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is  the Law and the Prophets."
Matthew 7:12
"In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
Acts 20:35
"Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men."
Philippians 2:3-11
"And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness."
2 Timothy 2:24
"Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;"
James 1:19
"With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,"
Ephesians 4:10
"For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
Matthew 6:14-15
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?"
Matthew 5:43-48
