I hate to admit it. But I am better at talking than listening.

Listening to friends. Listening to family. Listening to you. And, listening to God.

In conversation, I can be quick with a response. As someone is talking, I'm organizing my response. In the process, I often miss out on what someone is really trying to say. It is difficult to hear, really hear, what their heart is seeking.

Relationship with others, and with God, requires communication. And communication involves speaking and listening. Speaking truthfully and listening intently.

This month I am praying for God to open my ears and heart to truly listen.

Follow God

I was standing at the crossroads of decision. Whether to go or to stay. One felt forward and one felt backward. One was exciting and one brought on anxiety. Which way do I go?
So I did what I was supposed to do, I prayed. I ask God to provide direction.
Then like a pitcher shaking off the sign given by the catcher, I kept shaking off God’s sign. Nope, not that one. Give me another.  Nope not that one, give me another. [intensifying my no] No, not-that-one.
So left I went when God signaled right. I had chosen my path.
In The Best Yes, Lysa TerKeurst explains, “God tells us the right way to go, but we have to make the choice to do so. Choices and consequences come in package deals. When we make a choice, we ignite the consequences that can come along with it.”
I found myself right where I had decided to be, in disobedience, only I called it “my way”.
Sometimes we need God to show us the way.
And then sometimes we just need to go the way He has shown.

Seeking God

The voices are deafening. The images are blinding. The arguing is disheartening. There is way too much noise in the world demanding my attention.

So this month I am turning it all off and opening my Bible.

We already do not watch the news. We set aside watching tv shows long ago. But social media has become a thorn in my side. And if I am honest, the voices of some people have made social media, well, not very social.

So this month I am tuning it all out and seeking God's voice.

Want to join me in trading in the noise of worldly words for the healing, refreshing, grace-filled, redeeming words of our Heavenly Father?

Living a Joy Filled Life

Joy is not like happiness which is conditional to what is happing around us or whether or not things are going the way we want. No, joy is present even in the midst of trials and suffering.
I really want to learn how to access this type of joy, how about you?

Jingle and Joy

Jingle and Joy is an advent study, sharing the story of prayer beneath the tree for all people. You will want to keep it by your tree, bedside table, or coffee table to read each day from now until Christmas. Daily prayer prompts will keep you kneeling beneath the tree, looking up to God, trusting he hears your every request.
"Jingle and Joy is the perfect blend of the honest admission that Christmas can be overwhelming, but that joy is the greatest gift the season has to offer. This book will be on my nightstand this Christmas season!"

Bloom Where You Are Planted

We've all heard it -
 "Bloom where you are planted"
Some days and seasons that may sound simple, like when it's spring and everything is warm, watered and coming alive.
But what about in the scorching desert of summer?
Or in the freezing and fragile winter?
We all go through these seasons.
Join us in this study as we explore the saying and dig into God's Word to see what He tells us about blooming right where He has planted us.

Everyday Thanksgiving

True thanksgiving is so much more than a holiday or a by-product of changing seasons.
True thanksgiving is a heart condition displayed in our normal day to day life.
True thanksgiving is ... everyday thanksgiving.

Gracious Words

James warns us that the tongue is small but mighty:
James 3:5,6 “So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.”
The ability to control our tongues and our words comes only through surrendering them to God and allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede. It takes great obedience on our part to keep our words gracious.

We love our cars.
We love our favorite sports teams.
 We love that special restaurant.
 We love chocolate.
In a world where the word "love" has become common, how can we know genuine love?
 We can know God.
 We can know God's Love,
 and through him, love others.

Divine Inspiration

by Jana Kennedy-Spicer, March 6, 2017
Inspiration.... we may not always  be able to say when it will come, but I think we all know what inspiration does - it moves us to action.

It is a catalyst. It lights a fire. It's an "ah-ha" moment. It's the light bulb over the head.  Inspiration motivates. It spurs us to do.

I can always tell when inspiration has struck one of the grand-boys -- his eyes widen, his eyebrows arch, and then he says, "Nana, watch this!".  Oh- no

Now divine inspiration is of a different sort. Look how it is defined in the King James Dictionary:
The infusion of ideas into the mind by the Holy Spirit;

Bible Journaling Myth Busting

by Jana Kennedy-Spicer, November 04, 2016
When I began incorporating Bible Journaling into my Bible Study time, I was pretty intimidated by all of the pics of others beautiful journaling. I've always been a doodler and a letterer but a lot of journaling styles didn't really represent a doodling or lettering approach. They looked more like scrapbooking. They were beautiful, but just not me. So I hesitated and didn't begin Bible Journaling because I didn't think what I could see in my heart would "look right".

So let's just park right there for a few minutes before we begin the Myth-Busting and let me ask you a question.

Why? Why do you (want to) Bible Journal? Beyond the, "it looks pretty" and "everyone's doing it" there are much deeper heart reasons.
