31 Scriptures about the Attributes of God

If I asked you to describe your best friend in three words, what would you say?
What about telling us about the quality you admire most about your spouse?
Did a favorite teacher or mentor have a character quality you try to emulate?

Now, let me ask you how did you come to know the character qualities of any of these people?

Ok, I'll answer for all of us. We know someone's character qualities because we know the person. And we get to know a person by spending time with them, talking with and listening to them. We get to know someone by building a relationship with them.

When I was young, someone told me Jesus was loving and forgiving. I believed them. With child-like faith and trust, I believed all that I was taught about Jesus, all that I was told.

As I became an adult and had to deal with adult consequences of adult decisions, I came to realize that just knowing about God, by what others had told me, was not the same as knowing God.

Would you agree?

Think about the last time you met someone new. Maybe a friend or co-worker already knew this person and they filled you in on what this person was like. For the sake of conversation, we will assume your friend spoke kindly of this new acquaintance of yours, maybe describing them as polite, friendly, encouraging, etc. If you trust your friend, I imagine you would take them at their word. But you know that spending time getting to know this new person is really the only way to truly get to know their character.

My point, you ask.

My point is that even though many people I knew and trusted told me about how loving, kind, gracious and forgiving God is, there came a point in my life where I needed to know this from my own personal experience. More than this, I really wanted to know God, not just know about Him.

The only way I, and you, can get to know God, is by spending time with God. Specifically spending time with Him in His Word, reading the Scriptures, and talking with Him in prayer.

For my purposes, I like reading and studying the Bible using a variety of methods. What I am sharing with you today is the method of using a Scripture Reading List as a guide. The Scriptures which have been selected for this specific list are all related to the Attributes of God. Each of these Bible Verses describe some characteristic of God.

Today I am inviting you to get to know God, personally. Read through these Scriptures to get to know Him maybe in a way you have never known Him.

This list is not all inclusive of every attribute of God. In truth, every Scripture in the Bible reveals something about God. That's why we read and study it - to get to know Him. But, there's only as many as 31 days in a month, so we settled on 31 Scriptures About the Attributes of God.

Father,
Help me to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus when the world pulls me in other direction. Remind me of His suffering and sacrifice. Let me now forget that Christ was willing to endure the cross, so that my sins would be forgiven. I long to run the race before me, throwing off everything that hinders me and turning from the sin that so easily trips me up. My trust is in Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. In His name, I pray, Amen.  - Jodie Barrett, Faithfully Following Ministries

Thank you for this resource. As I read through it, I noticed in the prayer by Jodie Barrett a line that says, Let me now forget that Christ was willing to endure the cross... Perhaps this was a typo since it does not reflect the rest of this article. I believe it should say, Let me never forget that Christ was willing to endure the cross...
